Need someone to talk to?
Have you considered talking therapy?
Talking therapies can help with common mental problems like stress, anxiety and depression. You may be:
- having panic attacks
- struggling with flashbacks and nightmares
- feeling low and hopeless
- finding it hard to cope with work, life or relationships.
Other things that psychological therapies can help with include:
- constant worrying
- obsessive thoughts or behaviours
- fear of social situations
- constant worry about your health
- phobias
- depression
You can get free psychological therapies on the NHS. You can refer yourself directly to an NHS psychological therapies service (IAPT) without a referral from a GP. IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) is an NHS programme offering talking therapies for the treatment of depression, anxiety, social or other phobias, OCD or PTSD for those age 18yrs+. To find out more about IAPT call 01609 768890 or visit the website.
Which therapy you’re offered depends on which one has been shown to be most helpful for your symptoms. Here are a few examples:
CBT
CBT aims to improve your mental wellbeing by helping you understand how your thoughts can lead to unhelpful emotions and behaviours.
Guided self-help
A therapist supports you as you work through a self-help course in your own time, either using a workbook or an online course.
Counselling for depression
A type of counselling developed specially for people with depression.
Talking therapies are offered in different ways, including:
- using a self-help workbook with the support of a therapist
- as an online course
- over the phone
- one-to-one
- in a group
There is a lot of support available – This area has been created to support your mental health and support other people you know, including children and young people.

Help for parents and persons with parental responsibility
During the COVID-19 pandemic the freedom to engage in typical day-to-day activities has been reduced, the most immediate sources of support, respite and socialisation with friends and family limited, and attendance at local parent and baby groups removed.
The potential for all parents to feel isolated has been increased, regardless of whether they are experiencing a mental health issue or not. The potential for young people to experience mental health issues has increased too.
Whatever the circumstance, it is important to remember that help is at hand and you are not alone.
There is a lot of support available to parents who may be going through a difficult time:
The Mental Health Foundation
- Returning to school after lockdown including support for parents
- Coping during coronavirus: through babies’ eyes
- Parenting during the coronavirus outbreak
- Coping with coronavirus: a guide for young people
- Talking to your children about the coronavirus pandemic
